Originally named Ford Charcoal, the name was changed to Kingsford Charcoal after the Iron Mountain Ford Plant closed in 1951 and the Kingsford Chemical Company was formed and continued the wood distillation process.

The timing belt and motor mount part of the job on the Silver Slut is done now. Will service and fix a few other things and wrap it up and it should be good for ten more years.

Bum jack

Over the hump….. Took me a few days to get the timing marks right but yesterday the Silver Slut started going back together. These cars are hard to work on but I enjoy the challenge even when I’m bitching about things.

I bought a nice floor jack at Harbor Freight recently for a good price during a tent sale, the cocksucker leaks down so I’m returning it for an exchange. A floor jack is a must on this job, a bottle jack won’t cut it unless you put it on a furniture dolly or stout creeper so you can move it back and forth.

The morons

I’m sorry but all I have to post about right now is that cocksucking timing belt motherfucking son of a cunt set up and adjustments. I’ve replaced timing belts before, but years ago when life was simpler and engineers wasn’t such fucking idiots and trainers/instructors taught useful stuff.

I wrote a long post about replacing a timing belt on the 2.4 two cam engine but fuck it, I’ll just say that I got it right on the sixth try and doing it isn’t like any of the training videos, in fact they admit that it takes them four or five tries.

Improvise

When I was a young mechanic I made my own special tools at times to make my work easier, a few of them even ended up on the special tool boards in parts houses. If I was going to be doing more dual camshaft timing belts I would make a tool to lock the crankshaft in place to keep it on its timing mark while I work on getting the cams timed right. And I’d make a tool to lock the cams in place.

But for now I’ve just mickey moused a way to lock the crank in place, that shit works for me also. But I still haven’t got the three timing marks right, it will look perfect but when I turn the crank two turns to make sure they all line up again one of the fuckers is off a notch. I’ll have to have someone help me so I have extra hands and eyes.

Got a new timing belt and got it on last evening, too bad the exhaust cam was a notch off, but that happens at times, dual overhead cams can be tricky to get right so ya just keep trying until ya get things right.

Yuck

Replacing the timing belt on a PT Cruiser like the Silver Slut is no mechanics favorite job, many mechanics won’t even do them. It is a bit of a tough job but I made it look easy enough getting it out (I have witnesses), only to discover that the belt in it still had a lot of miles in it.

I couldn’t get the new one installed last evening, like it is a tad short, will try again this morning and if I can’t get it on I’ll go get a different brand. I just work on it a bit in the morning and evening to avoid the heat here. The video is how most backyard mechanics will see the job if they tackle doing one.

Nuts

Nan mentioned the size of the pecans in their area a while back and I was surprised at how big they are compared to the pecans here, this one still has the husk around it. The pecans here are as small as these Texas boyz nuts and peckers, hahahaha….

Many of the pecan trees here are pretty old, the research center here may have trees producing bigger pecans. I don’t know shit about pecans, I’m just muttering, time to polish my nuts.

Cut wire

Spotted a cut wire in the loom to the Silver Sluts computer so I fixed it, must be important for some function. I also cleaned the throttle body, interesting how just a little crud in one will trip a code like P0123 and cause stumbling and maybe a poor idle.

Well used

I pulled a spark plug out of the Silver Slut yesterday, boy, they wouldn’t have kept firing much longer, will replace all of them today. It was really tight, I worried about stripping the threads in the head so I was slow and careful removing it. Monkeys that don’t know how to properly work on aluminum engines should leave them the fuck alone.

Nancy Farm Mannikko and her hubby Ray Mannikko and I go back a ways, we have followed each other for years, well before I started stomping around on Facebook we did a lot of blogging on Blogger.

They live in the “UP” sometimes referred to as upper Michigan or Yooper country. Anyway, she sent me a care package, bless her little heart. A jar of her homemade awesome sauce, jar of her strawberry/rhubarb jam, jar of hot peppers and a bottle of pure Michigan maple syrup. You can bet your ass that I’m really going to enjoy these items and may even share parts of them with friends here.

I made pancakes yesterday so I could try the syrup, soooooo good. Who wants to try one of her hot peppers?

Chip key

Got a car that needs a chip key and you only have one? What if you lose or misplace it? Weakly Watson (on Austin Ave.) now has a key machine and can make you a copy of it so you can have two of them. Not cheap but a lot cheaper than calling out a locksmith. And, they will cut you a new door key for just two bucks and you should have at least one of them, hidden on the outside of the car so you can at least get in it.

With a door key they can cut you a new chip key, how cool is that? You can of course take your chip key and remove the chip and glue it under the cover over the key tumbler on the column and then all you need is a plain door key to operate the car. Dat’s wut I’m gonna do.

Vacation

Fixed without spending a lot
