I don’t know what the recycle laws were in the 50’s in Northern Idaho but as a kid I walked the highways and roads a lot for candy money. I’d walk the four miles to Smelterville on one side and turn in those bottles into a tavern, then walk back to Pinehurst on the other side and turn those and turn those bottles in at the grocery. Don’t recall what I got per bottle but it was enough to make it worth it. One time I came upon a six pack of beer someone had ditched and sold it to some older kids so that was a pretty good day.
